Who builds custom metal gear in New Zealand?

A plain, honest guide to the people who build horse floats, ute canopies, trailers, stainless tanks and truck bodies in New Zealand — who they are, where they’re based, what they specialise in, and how to choose the right one for your job.

Before you buy

How to choose a fabricator

Production vs custom. The big national brands are great when a catalogue model fits. If you need something built to your exact spec — an odd size, a particular layout, a repair or a one-off — a smaller general fabricator who builds to order is usually the better (and often cheaper) call.

Local vs national. A workshop you can drive to, talk to in person and pop back to for tweaks is far easier to deal with than a distant production line — especially for ongoing or one-off work.

Material & grade. For stainless, 304 covers most general and food work; 316 resists salt and harsh chemicals (marine, coastal, aggressive wash-down). A good fabricator recommends the grade that matches how the part will actually be used.

Certification. Anything road-going — trailers, truck bodies, tippers — must be built and certified to NZ standards. Confirm the builder handles this.

Get it in writing. Lead time, materials, finish and price should all be on the quote before work starts.

FAQ

Common questions

Who builds custom horse floats in New Zealand?

Established float specialists include Fineline (Hamilton), Thoroughbred Floats, Fieldline (Cambridge), Float Factory, Statesman (Christchurch) and Freeway. For a true one-off built to your exact spec, general fabricators such as Waikato General Engineering (Te Awamutu) or Specialised Stainless (Franklin / South Auckland) build floats to order.

Who makes the best aluminium ute canopies in NZ?

There's no single "best" — it depends whether you want a production brand or a custom build. Strong national options include Utemaster, Forged Alloy (Auckland), M2 Overland (Napier) and HuntawayFab. For a fully custom canopy or tray, a local fabricator like Specialised Stainless (Franklin) builds to suit your ute and trade.

Can I get a genuinely one-off custom build, not a catalogue product?

Yes. Smaller general fabricators are usually the better choice for true one-offs — tanks, hoppers, trailers, canopies, stock crates, repairs and modifications built from your description and dimensions. Specialised Stainless in Franklin (South Auckland) specialises in exactly this kind of design-to-order work in stainless, aluminium and mild steel.

What should I check before choosing a fabricator?

Confirm the right material and grade (e.g. 304 vs 316 stainless), that road-going gear (trailers, truck bodies, tippers) is built and certified to NZ standards, the lead time, and that the quote and spec are in writing. For ongoing work, a local workshop you can visit is often easier to deal with than a distant production line.

What's the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel?

Both are food-safe. Grade 304 suits most general and indoor food-contact work; grade 316 adds molybdenum for far better resistance to salt and harsh chemicals, so it's preferred for marine, coastal and aggressive wash-down environments. A good fabricator will recommend the grade that matches how the part will actually be used.
